On the 15th July 2017, Stephen and Rachel from OneWellness will be undertaking the Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge. This is a gruelling 25-mile hike over three of Yorkshires highest mountains – Pen-y-ghent, Ingleborough and Whernside. They will set off from Horton in Ribblesdale at 7.30am and hope to complete the hike in approximately 10 hours, completing a circular route back to Horton.
Thousands of people complete this famous route every year, and it has been something that Stephen has wanted to complete for years, but 2017 is the year.
The aim of the walk is to raise awareness and money for a local charity – Dementia Forward, the Harrogate & Ripon based charity which provides help and support for dementia patients and their families.
Stephen has already completed a walk up to Pen-y-ghent, alongside 15 other friends and family including children as young as three and up to the age of 75! His next training walk is taking place this weekend (17th June) and is with a smaller group, walking from Bramhope, across the Otley Chevin and onto Ilkley, completing approximately 13 miles.
Stephen’s preparation advice for the three peaks:
- Train before through other forms of exercise; cycling, swimming and weights are all good for preparing your legs and heart for the level of endurance you’ll need complete the challenge. Don’t leave it until the last minute and expect that you can then undertake a gruelling 25-mile walk!
- Ensure your footwear is suitable for the walk such as good, well-fitted, robust boots, as some of the walk might be uneven and wet. If you’ve recently purchased some new footwear, ensure you break them in beforehand.
- Ensure your equipment is suitable for the trek. Comfortable, lightweight clothing is recommended as well as a few spares in case the weather turns.
- Watch out for signs of an injury. When blisters and muscle injuries arise, they are easy to initially ignore. Remember to take several pairs of socks with you too, you should try and change your socks after every mountain climbed.
